 biography  Seto Kaiba was originally just Seto, born to a loving mother and father. His childhood for a time was actually very happy, where he was allowed to play and laugh with other kids and simply be himself. However, everything changed when his mother died giving birth to his brother, Mokuba. While many children would view their sibling as the reason their mom is dead, not Seto. He instantly LOVED his little brother and took on a parental role for him when their father was home late from work.
Even though they were a small family, they were still very happy and close. Yet just like before when things felt happy, everything came to an end again. His father died in a car accident on his way home from work, leaving him and his brother at the mercy of his parents’ family. Their mother and father both came from old money, and had inherited a small fortune from both sides that people in the family were incredibly jealous about not inheriting. His uncles and aunts argued about who would get custody of him and Mokuba, when one of his uncles won custody. However, upon officiating the adoption and receiving Seto’s inheritance, he immediately gave up all parental rights of Seto and Mokuba and then dropped them off at an orphanage. Seto, to this day, has never heard from his biological extended family since.The orphanage was a nice place, but Seto still wanted more for his brother. He developed trust issues from the abandonment and cruel nature of his other family, so he always taught his brother to close his heart to other people. Meanwhile, he would try to do everything he could at eight years old to give his brother the best life possible.This was when Seto noticed Gozaburo Kaiba had recently won multiple chess games. Seeing how rich the man was, and how many news outlets noticed he did not have an heir after his son died in a car accident a year ago, Seto saw an opportunity to trick this man into adopting him and his brother. Especially when it was announced he’d be visiting their particular orphanage from his generous donation as well as speaking with a few orphans for PR reasons.
Seto studied Gozaburo’s chess moves on television repeatedly. Practicing over and over again in his free time from school and looking after Mokuba until the very moment he would meet with Gozaburo and challenge him to a game of chess.If he won the chess game, then Gozaburo would adopt them. If he lost, he would apologize for acting out of line. However, Seto won to everyone’s shock within the orphanage. Gozaburo would then be a man of his word and adopt Mokuba and Seto.Except, this was not what Seto had expected of this situation. Gozaburo was incredibly hard on Seto, forcing him to learn college education material at only eight years old. Eventually, he would become physically abusive by paying tutors to beat Seto with rulers, crops, etc if he was ever caught slacking, sleeping or lacking in his studies. Gozaburo himself had also hit Seto on a few occasions by slapping him if he ever “spoke out of line” or received a grade he was disappointed in.Despite this new abusive home, Seto would mostly hide this from his brother. He would simply lie about the slap marks on his face and hands by claiming he accidentally hit himself or something fell on him, all Mokuba would know is that Seto would confess he was incredibly tired all the time from his education but never a thing about the violence he endured.This new childhood had broken something within Seto, turning the once sweet and selfless boy into someone cruel and sadistic the older he got. Even to his brother, he would encourage him to act out to others to prevent him from getting hurt, except he did often shield him from any form of abuse done by Gozaburo. If Mokuba ever did anything Gozaburo didn’t like, Seto would step in and take a slap from him so his brother wouldn’t get hurt.
The only thing to take his mind off the pain happening to him was duel monsters, a newly invented game that Industrial Illusions recently released to the world. Mokuba was sweet enough to make his brother a fake card of the Blue Eyes White Dragon, but Seto vowed he’d have that card someday for himself. He doesn’t know why he connects with the card so much, but he would often view it as a symbol of everything he wanted to be. Powerful, shining, intimidating, etc. What he doesn’t know is that the reason he loves the card so much is due to his past life, where the human vessel of the dragon had become lovers with his past life. Except she had died protecting him, but Seto has no idea about this situation.At the age of 14, he was then challenged by Gozaburo. If Seto could purchase KaibaCorp with a certain amount of funds, he would become CEO. Many would view this as clearly Gozaburo’s way of setting up Seto for failure, instead, he somehow managed to take over Kaibacorp with his little funds. What he did was blackmail, threaten and even physically beat multiple large shareholders of the company until he ended up taking full control of the company with the percentage he held over its shares.
Gozaburo was so ashamed he lost to a teenager that he would eventually kill himself, making a 14 year old Seto Kaiba the CEO of Kaibacorp as well as the heir to the entire Kaiba estate. Upon taking over the company, Seto completely closed its military division and started working on fully making it a AR, VR, gaming and software tech company, as well as signing a partnership with Industrial Illusions to use their hologram technology for dueling tournaments.Seto would continue to be blinded by hatred and anger from his childhood, and his childhood dreams of making an amusement park for all children to go to completely blindsided by his obsession to be the best duelist in the world as well as own all the blue eyes white dragon cards in the world.Through illegal and violence means, Seto Kaiba would obtain three out of four cards. He only needed one more, which was in the hands of Sugoroku Moto, the grandfather of Yugi Moto. Seto kidnapped Sugoroku Moto, had his goons physically harm the old man and then forced him into a duel while he was already injured. Seto won in only a few turns, where he took the card and ripped it in front of Yugi Moto. Except he didn’t calculate that Yugi would be upset by this and challenge him, where Seto gladly accepted thinking it would be another easy win.Except he would unexpectedly lose to Yugi Moto’s Yami self, who used his dark magic to shatter Seto’s mind and break the darkness out of his heart. This new sense of self without the darkness left Seto confused and feeling almost broken, so he left home shortly after the stay alone and worked on his new duel disk system as he tried hard to mentally recover without thinking so ruthlessly anymore.
Only Maximillion Pegasus would kidnap his brother and try to take over his company while he was away, where Seto desperately tried to rescue him but failed and Yugi would have to save him. He had nearly tried to take his own life rather than allow anyone else to take care of his little brother, where Yugi would allow him to try. Except, he lost against Maximillion Pegasus where Yugi would be the one to rescue him.Although bitter about his defeat to Yugi, he was grateful to him but vowed that the two would forever be rivals until victory. That would continue for the next 4 years of their lives, where he was so sore about defeat that he would even try to resurrect the soul of the pharaoh that possessed Yugi’s body in duels to try and win again.
At some point, he managed to create travel to the afterlife but he refuses to tell anyone but his brother about the results of that duel. By the age of 28, Seto created a successful school for future competitive duelists called Duelist Kingdom. As well as approving several top secret duel experiments on the island.Seto frequently donates money to orphanages, hospitals and several important charities. On top of his generosity, he owns an amusement park called Kaiba Land that gives free admission to children of all ages where the park was highly received by the public. Even though many people call him rude, he has a surprisingly good heart but is simply misunderstood by many.
